Boot disk error.

Alright, I've been utilizing this forum for the past few days because my computer was acting strangely. Slow on start-up, and giving me odd messages while my desktop was loading. "Invalid Backup Application to Web ID:02343". Things like that. I thought that the best idea was to do a full system recovery and start fresh. However, upon doing that, I began to recieve messenger messages, which I've found are spam taken care of from SP2.

My question for you is this: After the recovery, I started getting a black screen that says "Boot disk error, insert system disk and press enter." I press ctrl+alt+delete - or escape - and it restarts and usually loads the desktop. Sometimes I have to do it twice. What's going on?

you need to run a harddrive diagnostic utility. you either need to go to the computer manufacturers website or the harddrives manufacturer website to downlown their harddrive utility.

Okay, I'm not sure how to do that. I searched HP's website for anything to do with "harddrive utility" and got nowhere. I emailed Hp about the problem and they said,

"Thank you for writing back.

From your email, I understand that you are facing an issue with the disk
boot failure error message in your HP Media Center 854n PC even after
performing the system recovery.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your efforts to
troubleshoot the issue.

This issue might be due to corrupt or missing system files in the
computer. Therefore, to isolate this issue, I recommend you perform a
Clean boot process in the computer to resolve this issue. Clean boot is
the process of disabling and removing some programs and drivers from the
Windows startup process. This is done to identify and troubleshoot
issues occurring with Windows XP.

NOTE: Following these steps may result in loss of some
functionality
temporarily. Restoring the settings may return the original
error message or problem.

To perform a clean boot in Windows XP, follow these steps:

1. Log in as an Administrator or a member of the Administrators group
using Safe Mode.
2. Click Start, select Run, and type MSConfig.exe in the command line.
3. Click OK.
4. Select the General tab and click Selective Startup.
5. Deselect all the checkboxes except Use Original Boot.ini.

NOTE: You can re-enable any program by selecting the checkbox for
that program.

6. Click OK and restart the computer.

If the issue persists, please reply to this message and we will be happy
to assist you further.

Sincerely,

Catherine

Why would I replace the hard drive? Is there actually a problem with it? This only started after doing the recovery.

Thank you, I appreciate your faith in my intelligence. My rephrase would be, did I do anything to make it go bad, ie system recovery, or is this a normal thing, like elderly people breaking hips?

Sorry not trying to make a comment about your intelligence, I don't know you.
This kind of erratic behavior suggests a dying hard drive to me. And you have to realize hard drives are warrantied mostly for 3 years though a year ago some were only a year, and lately many have been croaking much sooner. This does not mean you caused it in any way.

Well atleast try everything you can think of before replacing it. Never good when you go out to replace something, then find the problem persists.

For all we know it could just be boot order (It happens..). try what HP has suggested also.
