Netbook wireless connectivity issue

Hi guys,

Hope this is in the right place - I was looking for some help. I've recently bought a Viewbook VNB120 and can't for the life of me get the wireless to work properly. Knew it was a risk buying a netbook made by Viewsonic but here I am.

Problem details:
* Wireless connectivity issue (connecting via cable is fine)
* Wireless works when I'm parked in the room with the router but not even a metre outside the room
* Other devices using wireless in the house have no issue
* According to the networking pop up in Windows, the signal to the home network is full

Network details:
* Home ADSL network running through a VoIP modem/router, haven't had any issues to date with it
* Modem/Router is a Belkin F1PI241egau which is four years old now
* WPA/WPA2 security (although I've tried switching to WPA2 security with no success)

Netbook details:
* Wireless adapter in device manager just says Broadcom Wireless Network Adapter with no other details - I've tried looking for updated drivers for it but can't find any
* Windows 7 Home Premium
* Had Trend Micro Internet Security installed on it when I bought it

Let me know if there are any other details I need to provide.

This can be a hard one to crack being that your wireless is working, but you have poor range.

I see that laptop has bluetooth, have you tried disabling that to see it helps?

Also, you're router is a bit old and only supports up to 802.11g, changing to or adding a wireless access point with 802.11n support would most likely help.

Thanks for the reply z1p, I thought it might be a hard problem to solve!

I've tried disabling the blue device to no avail. I have a newer router here, a Belkin, it just wasn't that expensive (was used while living in another city). I'll give it a try and see if it helps.

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately not but I also haven't upgraded my router yet. I'm going to get a Fritz! Box AIO probably nearer to the end of the year. Without internet on that computer I'm actually more productive though

Ahh OK.

Kinda sucks with that its not an isolated issue. Where did you get it from?

I got mine at OnlineComputer.. might check out the warranty.. but coudl be more hassle to send it in.

Il have a crack at reattaching the wireless antennae

Oh, so you're using the exact same netbook? The Viewsonic one? Yeah I got it from OnlineComputer. I had a glance at their warranty and it was a massive jerk around - they reckon that you have to contact the manufacturer or something like that. It's bogus - if a product doesn't work out of the box (i.e. it's not "fit for the purpose it was intended"), then you're allowed to return it to the retailer - it's in the Trade Practices Act 1974 (Cth).

Anyway, how old/new is your router? Does it have support for 802.11 N? Mine doesn't support 'N' - just G and B. I thought that might be it but if you're having the same issue with an N compatible router then it might rule out that possibility at least.

Yeh exactly same. Viewsonic Vnb120

looks like we have both been screwed by Viewsonic lol.

My wireless router is running on g at the moment. its a d-link 524. pretty old. only supports G.

I have this issue at other peoples houses too,.. and at university.

have you called up onlinecomputer already for their warranty? are u able to send it to them?

I am tempted to open it up and check the antennae (common problem with connectivity issues).. but it voids warranty.

Have either of you got a USB Wireless G adapter you can plug into it?
It certainly sounds like it either hasn't got a wireless antennae or it's disconnected.

@ Smurfy - unfortunately not, though that's a good idea. Might be worth just buying one anyway.

@ eTwee - it's looking that way, isn't it! I wouldn't be inclined to open it and void your warranty - not yet anyway. The warranty details are here: http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/pol...fa3d246d8c3e2d - the third bullet point down under 'Warranty' is the bit I was talking about re. them washing their hands of notebooks. I'm guessing that that means we have to contact Viewsonic in Australia for warranty issues.
