Computer Not Shutting down

Hi there Guys & Girls

Last couple of weeks i have had a problem with my computer not turn off. If i turn my computer on, use it for a short while, then no problem. But if i use it for any length of time then it doesn't shut down. I've completed the following tasks but it still doesn't work.

Spybot
Adaware
Cleanup!
Disk Defrag

My computer's hard drive is about 4 years old now, could it be the case that i might need a new one??

My Hijack log is listed below

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

You can delete

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7c1ce531-09e9-4fc5-9803-1c2956615786} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {E856B973-45FD-4559-8F82-EAB539144667} (Dell PC Checkup Installer Control) - http://pccheckup.dellfix.com/rel/35/...l/gtdownde.cab

As for your shut down prob
Do you run a Virus scanner ? you didn't post if you had run one

Goto Start / Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manger / View ,click on show hidden devices, then check the list for anything that has a yellow question mark in front of it.

If nothing has, have you added any new hardware or installed any new programs lately? sometimes any of those can cause a conflict and Windows wont shut down.

Ok, i have deleted the two items you suggested. I use Norton Internet Security 2005 as my virus scanner.

I have no yellow question marks in my Device manager.

I have just remembered that i recently installed a further 512 RAM making my system now 1024 RAM.

If the ram is oncompatible, and unless it is exactly the same it probably will be
with DDR ram, there would be other things showing up, on the otherhand that can take up to a year too.
That sounds like something hanging at shutdown, and I vote anything Norton for system shutdown problems. Of course the list of things Norton really fouls up on a system is quite long, but shutdown and restart problems head the list!

Hi, i have just been through the same thing as you, see my thread.

http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...d.php?t=105006

It was Norton that was doing this to my system, live up-date wasnt working properly and log viewer in Norton was crashing my system everytime i went into it. I would check whether its Norton doing this. I have now uninstalled Norton and i have no problems at all.
