Exclamation Not again...read this
About 2 months ago I had this prolem...and well I think its back, it all starts with a random restart and then I get a screen that says my hard drive has been changed, I then hit F1 to continue and my startup goes to a black screen that says my startup is corrupt and I need a startup disk, then I restart it all again and nothing happens, my computer starts with no problem, but it progresses to the point that I can no longer start up my computer any more, today it just started to do the hard drive has been changed stuff, what is going on? plz help!!!!

Lee - it sounds as though it could be a virus. As long as you insist on using KaZaA and downloading their shonky files, this will happen. From memory, you have Norton. Download the WinXP boot disks that are appropriate for your version of XP from here and see if you can run Norton from the CD. Instructions on how to do this here

well I can run windows now, I ran a check, and there is nothing....I was just saying i think it will get to the point when it won't even start up, yeah but kazaa is amazing, I don't know if I could live with out it...haha, any better p2p servers?

Not sure about any better servers, but one suggestion might be that ANY download you do, have your AV program check it for viruses, and keep the AVP up to date!!!

don't worry I scan once or twice a day, and update the same too, but thats not my problem now...I gotta figure out whats going on...

Lee - just to be on the safe side, try an online scanner like Housecall. BTW disable Norton first. A message indicating a changed harddrive means that something is writing to your drive. The last time I saw this, it was a memory resident virus.

OK..well, if you want to post a Startup List, I will have a look at it for you and see if it could be a possible software conflict.

Just ran and compared Startup. Didn't see any software conflict.
Only diff. between you and me is I've got SP 1.
Definitly looks like virus on HDD.

Lee, your startups are fine. There is no evidence of any malware. Have a look in Event Manager and see what it tells you. It might help us to pinpoint the problem.
