Help! Motherboard or CPU dead?
Hello, I just got a used AMD64 and an MSI FIS2R mobo, put it together with 512MB DDR3200 ram, a radeon 9800 Pro and an 80GB maxtor ATA HD. When I switch it on, nothing happens. No boot screen, no beeps, no IDE activity. The CPU fan spins but the Video card one does not. What's dead?!

Well, something should happen if your power supply was working properly, even something as minute as the spinning fan like you described. What power supply unit are you using? (make/model/wattage?)

Do you have any other power supply units you can test on your system? It sounds to me that either the PSU or mobo is defective, and it's harder to believe a motherboard would be faulty right out of the box. It happens, sure, but in this case I would try replacing the power supply if you have a spare you can try out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did that PSU come with a case that you bought? I recently bought a new case that I liked and it happened to come with a power supply built in (a powmax 450w) and it caused the same problems you are having now. I replaced it with a Mad Dog Superpower 350w and everything worked just fine.
Not to say that PSU's that come with cases are always junk, but $60 or less for a case and a power supply, you usually get what you pay for. I know I did. ![]() |

I've now tried a couple of PSUs including the one that is powering this computer with no luck, the thing's just dead! The mobo is actually B-stock from Dabs.com, but it said it was working fine, so, i'm a bit confused. If it's not the PSU is has to be the Mobo?

The fan on the video card is NOT spinning, correct? You don't need RAM or a CPU installed to provide the video card with power. Even then, it sounds like the motherboard is toasted. If you are sure that you have the case speaker plugged in correctly, and you get no beeps whatsoever, and the video card is known to be in working condition, it sounds to me that your motherboard may be defective.
