Need help with this Vaio..

Hello,
I am new to this site and came here to ask a question about a friends computer. He bought a sony vaio that he knew nothing about. It doesnt work so he asked if i would take a look at it. When it powers up it displays the word "Sony" in the middle.. thats all it does. I held down esc while i powered it on and it says this:

PhoenixBios 4.0 release 6.0
R01075k
CPU = amd 4 processor 1000mhz
637k system ram - pass
383m extended ram - pass
256k external cache sram - pass
system bios shadowed
umb upper limit segment address: E69C

and at the bottom is says "F2 to enter setp"

if i click f2 right away it will say "enetering setup.." and does nothing else

it appears that the hdd does not operate - no lights lighting up

what can i do? it is an older looking laptop but has xp home(or so it says)
name of this computer is = pcg-fxa36

any help would be appreciated with getting this thing to work.. thanks!
