Computer shut down by itself - moved by Jintan

For some reason while I was away from my laptop it shut down on its own and according to event viewwer it happened at 1:18 pm today. I came back to my computer a little after 5:30 and saw that it was off. I left no programs running and now windows open, so it wasn't overheating and even when I'm on my computer it doesn't overheat.

Yesterday I did have an issue where the computer didn't go into hypernation, but was stuck in the process of going into hypernation.

The only error I could find that happened a little before the comptuer said it shut down is this

Name resolution for the name isatap.hsd1.in.comcast.net timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

That event is related to your network connection. Rebooting your modem should fix it.

Without an error recorded (it's highly unlikely the above event is the cause of your shutdown) one isolated shutdown is almost impossible to diagnose.

If you have further problems with hibernation and a crash, you could check out the hotfix here and see if it applies.

Thanks. One thing I did try was plugging my computer into a different outlet to see if that was the problem. I read somewhere online that a bad outlet can cause the computer to shut off on its own. So I'll keep my finger crossed if not I'mm be back, since I have installed all the important windows updates.

Ok, see how it goes and we can look at it again if it happens again.

The computer shut down on it's own again. This time I was using it when it happened. I was on the internet, using IE 9 browser and was on the Bestbuy website viewing their weekly ad, I went to switch to the next page and it stalled. The screen fadded out to a black screen with a blue box in the center, it had a count down of I believe 60 seconds when it would shut down, what I could read quickly I think I saw something about a disk error before the laptop shut down. Also laptop was not hot.

Any ideas? Thanks

It's not mailware, I run both ccleaner and malwarebytes at least once a month.

wolflmg, Because of the tie-in with Internet use, I kinda do sense malware involvement. Let's take a look, and see if we need to move this to the Malware Removal Forum.

The system is Windows 7, so when running any of the scan files we use, be sure to right click the file, then select "Run as administrator" to start the scan/tool.

And To make sure you have an accurate view of files there, make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types"

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs. Here are some antivirus disable tips if needed.

-------

Click here and download OldTimer's OTL to your desktop, then click that to open the scan display. At the top click "Scan All Users", then click "Run Scan". Make no other changes at this time.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are also saved in the same location as OTL.exe. Post the contents of those back here please.

Seems to be having some issues. I downloads fine, I go into my downloads folder, right click and run as admin., check scan all users and then run scan, it's fine for like a minute, but then stops responding when it scans for firefox settings, which is weird since firefox is no longer on my laptop. Uninstalled it a few weeks ago.

Not quite the same detail level, but instead Download RSIT (random's system information tool) from here to your desktop. Then click on the RSIT.exe to open the RSIT display, and click the Continue button.

If RSIT downloads/installs HijackThis be sure to agree to the install of that.

Once the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents here for review please. The log can also be found at C:\rsit\log.txt.

RSIT will also create a second log, info.txt, which will be minimized to your taskbar. Post that here as well please (it will also be stored at C:\rsit\info.txt).

Okay, I may have fixed it. Went back and downloaded it and change the download path, IE had it set to my download folder.

Nope, was doing the same thing. I'll try the other one.

An adware service and some so-far remnant folders of other adware. I will move this to the Malware Removal Forum, and then we can check in more detail.

Be sure to continue to temporarily disable any protective software when running the scan tools we use here.

Click here and download the installer for Gmer to your desktop, then click that file to run Gmer.

Once the opening scan finishes, click on Scan (again, before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan).

When completed, click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please.

-----------

Download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • If you can have an open Internet connection, and allow it to download the latest Avast engine detections.
  • If avast! antivirus is already installed, just do the next step.
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

---------

Click here and download Kaspersky's TDSSKiller to your desktop, but as you download it, rename it to larry.com then click that file to run TDSSKiller.

In the display that opens click Start scan. Once that completes, follow any prompts to act on anything it located, including as reboot (Reboot Now) if requested.
When the scan completes it will create a log file on your C drive.

Similar in name to this:

C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt

Your copy will be different - some of those numbers will reflect the date/time it was just run by you there.

Copy/paste those contents back here please. If it does locate malware, but does not prompt for a reboot, go ahead and do reboot.

-----------

Open TDSSkiller again. This time, when the display shows, select Change parameters. Place a check next to Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK, and Start scan.
