RAM sticks

Hi all

Currently I have a 256 DDR pc2700 RAM stick in my comp, if I take that out and replace it with a DDR 1 gig pc3200, is that bad? Would I need to get a 1 gig of DDR RAM pc2700?

help please

If you put PC3200 in a computer that is now running PC2700 the PC3200 will only run at PC2700. So, no, it won't be bad but it won't run any faster. And it might not even work, that depends on what computer you have and whether the motherboard can handle it or not.

I originally had a pc2700, and when I put in the pc3200, I was getting errors causing my computer to crash and programs closing itself. Going back to Frys Electronics to get a pc2700 1 gig, hope it works, tired of my slow computer!

Thanks all

If you still have problems when installing the new PC2700 gig, go into your computer and remove the CMOS battery, leave it out for about 30 minutes, then put it back in. You'll have to reset the time and date, but it should clear out anything the bios picked up with the other ram and allow you to use your computer as it was before the other ram change.

No, your PC3200 will still BSOD if it's the wrong type for your computer. Resetting the bios/cmos won't help here.

It looks something like a coin and is about the size of a nickel and will be nickel in color. Miz has posted elsewhere on the XP forum instructions on how replace the battery. Briefly, unplug from power supply, remove cover, touch bare metal, find battery, carefully remove it remember which side is up, take battery to store and buy an identical one. Remember to touch bare metal before re:installing.

Putting in faster memory by itself isn't going to make the computer run faster. Increasing the amount of RAM increases the potential for running faster. Installing a compatible better and faster processor will make the computer run faster. If you can ascertain the make and model of the motherboard you can very likely go the manufacturer's web site and find compatible memory and processors.

Battery size is CR2032, and can be bought at most computer or office stores, or WalMart.

And Jim is right, ram won't really speed up your computer if it's slow. Many factors come in to play here. Some could be spyware/malware slowing you down.
