Problems loading user profile

Hi,

Friday evening we had to shut down the computer because of storms that came through. Later when we turned it back on, we received the following message after trying to load our user profile:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows will then proceed to load the default profile. None of our settings are saved on this default profile, and several folders were "hidden." Even our favorites that were saved in our internet browser were deleted.

Another thing that began appearing when the temporary profile loads is an AVG error message about the register license not being found. We thought maybe AVG was causing the whole problem so we tried uninstalling AVG but it will not let us uninstall OR reinstall the newer version because it cannot find a particular avg file.

We also tried doing a system restore to a couple of weeks prior but it will not allow us to do that either. Is there any way to restore our user's profile and all of our settings/favorites?

We would greatly appreciate any advice! Thank you so much.

The problems you describe make me suspect malware. Trying to get the user account back if it's all malware infected would be an uphill battle.

I suggest you post in our Malware Removal forum asking the experts there to help you determine if your computer is infected and, if it is, get it cleaned up.

Thank you so much, I will do that. We are now having some folders disappear altogether so you're probably right.
