Unhappy Windows XP still not working after reinstallation

It all started while i was installing a program, my pc bugged and i had to shut it down manually. I started it again and ran CrapCleaner to clean up the system. I restarted it again and could not get to windows. It said something like
window/system32/system file missing or damaged

So i formated and re installed windows.
I tried with different cds and version and none seem to be working.
With some, the error message system32 file missing was still appearing
Others asked me to reboot after completing installation and then nothing

Now I see the hp logo and then nothing, just a black screen , althought i installed a clean copy of windows XP that I bought
I can still access the bios menu, i tried resetting the initial settings etc but nothing worked, i still get the black screen after the hp logo...

So is it a hardware problem? is the pc "dead"? I have no idea what to do ive tried everything i could and could really use some help!

my pc is a compaq nc 8430
intel core tm 2 cpu 1833mhz speed if you need any other info just ask me!

i hope someone will help me!

i just ran memory test from bios, says everything is ok, but HDD self test says: test 1 (quick) Error: Read failure
and i have no idea what that means...
would eally appreciate the help
thanks!

Yep, it could be the harddrive or the power supply.. See if you can do a repair install with your windows xp cd.. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx

i changed the hard drive, now the tests say its working and i can install windows, when i reboot after installation, a blue screen appears for a couple of seconds, then it goes back to the the hp logo.
i tried using the recovery console with no results.
i tested the memory also and its all fine...

You might have a corrupt BIOS. You may want to download the BOIS for that model and flash the bois.
