Here is the details:
slow 15 min start up I have Dell Dimension 8400 Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3 2 GB of Ram My computer start time got slow after I updated windows update last week. I have tried every thing: Defregmented Deleted all tmp files reduced start up programs I have two printers, one is Epson Stylus C60 plug in to computer at USB port and the other one is Brother 490 which is wireless (Scanner, printer, copy). Logitech webcam done a scan with Malwarebytes and/or SUPERAntiSpyware= yes just scan and here is a log from Ran a scan with HijackThis, then copy-and-paste that new log here. This is a total time to turn off and turn on computer and open Internet explorer. It stays on the WELL COME banner for 2 min. before loading the desk top. I will try the systems restore to night when I will have some time. In past I have spent lots of time with systems restore but never work on this computer. I may load GO BACK from Norton on this computer after all the problem of slow start resolve. One more thing, I have MAGIC JACK hooked up to this computer, do you think that may be the problem. I have tried turning on computer without MAGIC JACK but still the start up time is long 8 to 9 min. Tried booting in Safe Mode Safe mode does not work at all (tried safe with network also, did not work) It starts with following: multi(0)disk(0)Rdisk(0)partition(2)windows\systems 32\drivers It keep changing through various drivers and finaly freezes. I waited for 10 min but nothing happend so I manually turn of the computer. Ran chkdsk but could not see the result as it flashes over and gone. The problem is in loading operating systems: IT TAKES 1.5 MIN TO START UP WINDOWS ONE MIN OF BLANK SCREEN 2 MIN OF WELCOM SCREEN 1 MIN LOADING YOUR PERSONAL DATA THEN DESK TOP COMES AND START LADING START UP PROGRAMS IT TAKE BETWEEN 2 TO 3 MIN BEFORE I CAN OPEN UP INTERNET EXPLORER Only 3 items check in startup #1. C rogram files/ Nortonsystems works #2 C:/program files Norton systemswork basic #3 C:\ windows\systems32\ctfmon.exe |

Do a System Restore to a point prior to the Windows Update that slowed things. After reboot, shut down normally, wait a few, then start like normal. Grab a stopwatch & check - still take too long?

You could try unplugging everything except keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Is it still the same? |

If you can get into Safe Mode With A Command Prompt, then try this:
If that doesn't work, try removing the update from Add/Remove programs. Do you know if the update included driver updates ? (especially a video driver update) |

The quickest thing is to reinstall the OS from the recovery disc's. Sounds like some corrupted OS files. Choose the repair option when asked. If you select the "new install" it'll format the drive and erase all your data

I have a few freebies you can search for and try if you like.
r2 Studio's Startup Delayer. Make programs start at whatever time you want them to. Cleaners that work together to spic and span me. CCleaner. Ra's PureRa. Another system cleaner. Ra's JavaRa. Removes old Java installs. FCleaner. Defraggler. Defrags better than Windows. Revo Uninstaller, to remove programs and clean them up. Hope these help. Should clean you up even more and help improve your system a bit. EDITED to add info. Last edited by CyberTrek; November 21st, 2009 at 07:24 AM. |

Hello bombaykid. You could use these utilities to speed up your machine.
http://www.windowsstartup.com/download.php Use the simple symbol system you stop unwanted programs from starting up at boot everything is reversible by reticking the box/boxes. http://www.registry-clean.net/free-registry-defrag.htm This is a registry defragger not a cleaner. http://www.auslogics.com/en/software...efrag/download This will defrag your disk. I would also suggest that you use this to remove any temp files/folders. http://www.ccleaner.com/ |
