Surface Book 17 Dual Boot?
G'day Folks.
I tried this question in Windows 10 and got no response. I am hoping that Linux will work better. Does anybody know how to set up a "Microsoft Surface Book 4" running win 10 to dual-boot with Linux Mint Cinnamon? Even though I leave the 2 halves connected together, when I boot from USB I lose the key-board. So I cant even run Mint from the CD. Very frustrating........... |

I am not sure what you are asking. Do you want to dual boot Win 10 and Mint??

Just for clarity are you dual booting or using a live USB version? If live you may not have transferred the live system correctly. |

Yes it is a USB Stick, and yes I tried unplugging and replugging the keyboard (NBG). Of course while the keyboard is unplugged I can't do anything, because the USB is not connected anymore until I plug it back in.
I am using a live USB Flash Stick version. That I want to use to install a dual-boot. But without a keyboard I can't even install a single linux only boot. I tend to think that Microsoft is leaning the Apple way of "Buy us and you are stuck with us". I only bought that computer because it is very good hardware. But I am not very happy without Linux. |

Wow John. Its nice to see that I a not alone. Although it doesn't help much.
That bit about the external keyboard working looks interesting. First I will have to get me a USB keyboard because all mine are circular plug ones. Of course that won't fix the problem because using a laptop with an external keyboard seems a bit strange. But, I suppose I will be able to use it as a desktop. |

You won't need a key board just get a "ps to usb converter"
you may have one sitting in your bits and pieces drawer Take a look here: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=ps+yo+usb+...t=lm&ia=images |

Yep. I got a 'ps to usb converter' and 'Mint Cinnamon' worked fine with the usb keyboard. Of course I did not install it because the microsoft laptop only has 2 usb ports and that with a mouse would have cut me down to no flash stick holes.
So, my grand-daughter came to visit for a week (She starts uni next year). Her laptop packed it in while she was doing her homework, so I gave her it to use. She likes windows 10 and was wrapped in the computer so I gave it to her. And, I went back to my Toshiba KIRA dual-boot. Apparently while she was flying back to the USA she checked all around the airports and the plane to see who else could afford a Microsoft laptop. |

So now, I will have to save up and look around for a (Games?) laptop with as good as the Microsoft screen resolution and 2-way-camera.
I also want at least 1Tb HD, 3-4 usb ports and top speed. |

You COULD have got a usb hub fairly cheaply which would have given you plenty of places for everything. Never mind but next time you will know. I am sure your granddaughter is totally rapt with her favourite 'grandie" at this time. good outcome for everyone.................... |

If you want a games laptop (I guess you are no talking about Solitaire and Mah-jongg) You need something with a grunty graphics card or an amazing on board video set up..

Yeah... I don't actualy want it for games either. I spend a lot of time playing with family photo's and video's, both old and new. Some of them are very old and scratchy. We take a lot of family photo's where a different kid pulls funny faces. So I have to swap heads and/or hands etc, to get an all good picture for every-one. Then I store them all. We also take a lot of video's. Apart from storing all, I also enjoy cutting and joining them to show their growth and funny behavior at different ages. (I have grandkids aged between 4 and 35) |

Of course 'Microsoft Service Book 4' has a very good camera and terrific screen resolution as well as pretty good speed but, Windows 10 has gone too far towards Apple and I don't like it.
I also think that $4000 is way too high for a 1TB HD. I only use Windows to watch TV because iview has gone off Linux. So I also want to be sure that I can dual-boot with Mint. |
