The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible. [more]

They say the Church must offer the gospel in ways “appropriate to changing times, intelligible and attractive to our contemporaries”.
The Bible is true in passages relating to human salvation, they say, but continue: “We should not expect total accuracy from the Bible in other, secular matters.”
Cunning of those Bishops to identify those parts of the Bible that science can prove to be false as not "totally accurate". While claiming that the rest is accurate.

Might as well claim that the works of William Shakespeare are basically accurate because there is a place called Venice and there were Merchants there.

One can extend biblical historicity to the evaluation of whether or not the Christian New Testament is an accurate record of the historical Jesus and of the Apostolic Age. This tends to vary depending upon the opinion of the scholar.

The Catholic Church also teaches the inspiration and inerrancy (and material sufficiency) of the Bible (see Dei Verbum 11). But does it believe in Scripture Alone — what I would call the “exclusive sufficiency” of scripture? No. Because if everything that we believe must be tested against the text of scripture, that’s also true for the belief in Scripture Alone itself.

The problem the church has with the bible is that it does not tell the story as they would like. Their history has been one of lies since what they did was alter the bible so as to fit their suggested point of view as to who is God. One prime example of this was that they removed the Name of God from the bible and even to this date they refuse to use His name in any form of worship. Now that’s strange since Gods name originally appeared in scripture more than 7000 times. That’s right 7000 times. How then can they prove anything with the lies and contemptuous acts against the written word of God that they are guilty of. Just for those who might have never heard that name because they are associated with the church Gods name is JEHOVAH.

I was raised in the Catholic church and attending 8 years of Catholic school. My parents were devote Catholics, I am not. The argument that the Bible can be proven has been on-going for centuries.

Enough said.....

Trouble is that the bible was written my many individuals, some of the information relates to historical facts, some to mythology and some to the delusions of the authors. Unfortunately others have claimed that all the writings are the the inspired word of god, without any explanation of how they came to that conclusion.

Some interesting facts which may help pull the whole discussion into perspective are:-
1) Monotheism has only existed for around 3,800 years, while the human race (homo sapiens) can be proven to have existed for 193,000 years and may have existed for around 300,000 years.
2) Human kind has always had an inquiring nature, seeking to find out the why's, where's and how's. Unfortunately when the answers were not readily available the tenancy has been to invent a conclusion that fitted the known facts at that time.
3) As more information from scientific study became available, some, especially those in power, refuted the new information as it did not fit with their fiction ideas, derived at a time when the facts were not known or properly understood.

Something to consider, if there is a god, why did he wait so long to reveal himself to the human race?

Could the universe have just happened by accident, or was there a divine force that created the energy that caused the big bang, that we believe started it all, 13.8 billion years ago?

Could that divine force be a god? If so is that god in any way related to the god described in the bible?
