Can't Install Service Pack 3 on both computers

We have 2 computers in our home and we can't isntall SP3 on either one. I heard this may have something to do with spyware/malware or something like that which prevents the installation after SP3 has been downloaded into the PC?

I may be in a Catch 22 because I have tried free downloads of Anti Virus programs and I can't install them unless SP3 is installed. I did try ESET NOD 32 free trial for a month. But using it on both computers, we thus still cannot installed SP3.

Any suggestions?

I supposed that is possible, did you just go to Microsoft's website to download SP3, or did you go through Windows Update to get SP3?

Windows update sent it to one computer and keeps reminding me constantly that updates are ready to be installed(off the little yellow shield icon) - the other computer never got a windows update, so I downloaded it myself - I think I downloaded it right off MS website.

We can do all the installing stuff and click all the accept buttons and such during the installation and it takes, like, forever and then at the very end of the installation(a few hours later) you get some message saying "unable to install" or words to that effect.

Before upgrading, try: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

It does have some errors listed that you may see, so try to find the error your getting exactly, and follow what it says to try.
