fatal 06

I'm getting this message on my old win98 machine. I have already, done the deep scan for bad sectors, re-formatted the drive twice, wrote zero's to drive once, ran all the diagnostic tests that came on the disk for that hd, and re-installed 98 twice. it says " a fatal 06 has occures at 0028:d19ce5bo"

What are Fatal Exception 06: Invalid Opcode fault
This error is returned if any one of the following conditions are true:
The processor tries to decode a bit pattern that does not correspond to any legal computer instruction.
The processor attempts to execute an instruction that contains invalid operands.
The processor attempts to execute a protected-mode instruction while running in virtual 8086 mode.
The processor tries to execute a LOCK prefix with an instruction that cannot be locked.

does this mean the cpu is junk?

hi

if it still runs in safe mode, please boot into that.
run sysedit

in [config.sys] (which may be empty for USA users...)
add the lines

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=A000-C7FF

in [system.ini]
in the [386Enh] section, add the lines

MinSPs=16
EMMExclude=A000-CFFF

save and reboot
it may cure this error.
I am not sure.
It "tastes" like a videocard display error.
it COULD be a memory error. (faulty RAM...)

So, next thing you could do is get simmtester from docmemory, or memtest386 and run it from floppy when you find the time.

hi

you got the error while in safe mode...
that sounds not good.
we have not asked, but have you looked at the insides of the computer recently?
it could be clogged with dust and some components may get too hot.

it is an old CPU.
these old CPU had little thermal protection features (TOO HOT, you got a scream and shutdown, but no warning before that critical temperature was reached...) Errors can pop up before that critical, tho.

Videocards too, when they heat up they will cause errors.

XP? NO, i don't think that will be the best solution.

after cleaning the fans etc, can you run memtest?

Gently touch the heat sink (which might be hot) on the CPU and make sure it is firmly attached. Reboot with the cover off and make sure that all fans are running.

Consider setting up a big fan outside of the case and and blast the CPU. Try some stuff and see if the problem went away.
