black screen

I have a HP laptop running visa. In normal start up everything looks normal until sys is loading, then a BLACK scree with pointer. mouse moves. alt ctl delete bring up menu but nothing else ( it functions). In safe mode display is normal

if it works in safemode, try doing a system restore to a previously saved restore point prior to when the problem started.
