The dependency service or group failed to start

Hi

Like many I'm trying to upgrade Vista to Windows 7. I ran the Win 7 system readiness tool and the only thing outstanding was SP1. In common with many I could not instal SP1. I tried all the fixes including Chkdsk and SFC Scanow etc and the result is that I have no internet access with the above message next to the network icon.

I've tried restting the TCP/IP stack in a command window (restore .net...winsock..) but still the same message. I understand it could be due to a corrupt file in the sytem 32 folder and there is a fix involving taking ownership and deleting that. Has anyone tried that?

Is there anything else I can try to get internet back short of a clean instal?

That error doesnt provide any useful information at all. Have you run network diagnostics? See here. If not please do so and post the result in full.

Also have a look in Event Viewer and see what Errors (not Information or Warnings) were recorded at the time and date that the problem occurred. Go to Start Search and type:

eventvwr.msc

eventvwr.msc will appear at the top of the Menu. Doubleclick on it and click on Custom Views > Administrative Events. Look at Errors only. Post back the Event Source, the Event ID and any other relevant information. To do this, doubleclick on the Event, click on the General tab and click on "Copy" and paste the information into a new document (if more than one error) and then post it here.

Hi

1. Network diagnotics just returns The computer does not have network adaptor installer When you elect install it just goes to the the help and support pages with info about loading adaptor from disk-which I do not have.

Incidentally before I read your post I downloaded (I dual boot Vista and XP) network drivers for Vista. When you try and instal it advises that the version on the PC does not allow upgrades etc and prompts you to delete them. I did that, tried to install again and got the same message!!!

Event viewer:

Didn't know how to copy and paste as don't have Word on XP! Gist is that 99.9% of errors are Windows mobile failed to connect O*80004005, Source Wces Comm ID 7. I also have a few The dependency service or group failed to start, Service Control Manager Event, ID 70001. Also found 1 TCP/IP Protocol Driver failed, Service Control Manager Event. ID 7000.

I've probably made a bad situation worse now and am ready to do clean reinstall.

What do you think?

Many thanks

I am a volunteer Simon and I assist when I have the free time to do so. I also live in the Southern Hemisphere so I am usually sleeping while you are awake and vice versa.

The relevant error is:

Quote:
The dependency service or group failed to start, Service Control Manager Event, ID 70001.
However I need more detail than that. I explained how to copy and paste (see below) and you dont need Word. Notepad will do just fine and all OS's have it.

Doubleclick on the Event, click on the General tab and click on "Copy" There is a tutorial here that you can use to practice this if you need to.

Once you have copied a section of text, click on Post Reply in this thread and position your mouse in the reply box. Rightclick and choose paste.

A clean install might be the best option but it could be a simple fix. I wont know until I see the full information from event viewer.

Hi Anne Marie

I do apologise as I hadn't taken the time difference into account.

I know how to cut and paste I was just concerned as I dual boot and had to go into Vista to use eventviewer and then restart in XP to post. I wasn't sure how to overcome this problem.

Here are the details required. I think the most recent ones are explained by me deleting the network adaptor!!

Thanks again and sleep well.

No problem.

Copy and paste to Notepad in Vista and then copy and paste the file to your XP installation. Doubleclick on Computer. Your should see your XP installation and be able to navigate to your Desktop to paste it. If access is denied, take ownership of the files. See here for more help.

I think I should have a look at your services. Go to Start > Run and type:

cmd.exe

and click ok. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt > and hit Enter.

sc query state= all > c:\services.txt & start notepad c:\services.txt

Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.

Hi

Thanks again. Sorry for delay but been away for a few days.

I do need to take ownership of the Services file but can't locate it. Do you know where I can find it precisely in Vista.

In relation to pasting the details from Eventviewer that is what I included in my last post. There are so many errors it would take an eternity to paste details of all of them. Is there anything else you specifically need in relation to this?

Thanks again

Why, please explain what you were doing and the exact error message you got.

Sorry. In relation to Services. Notepad did not pop up with some information. There was a series of lines about needing help for queries etc and I noticed a line saying access to this file was denied. I wrongly conflated that with your first request to Copy and paste to Notepad in Vista etc

I'm being obtuse I know but I don't know what I'm supposed to be copying in respect to this.

You did originally ask me to use eventviewer and post the detail on the errors.
Are you saying that we have moved on from this now.

Sorry to be so dumb.

Ok forget about Event Viewer. I have the information I need from there.

Let's move on to what I asked you to do next which was:

Quote:
Go to Start > Run and type:

cmd.exe

and click ok. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt > and hit Enter.

sc query state= all > c:\services.txt & start notepad c:\services.txt

Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.
You said that notepad didnt open with information about your services. Did you copy and paste the command in bold? If not, it's entirely possible you made a mistake typing the command. All spaces must be included. Try again please and this time, copy and paste the command into the command window (select and rightclick to copy and then rightclick to paste).

If notepad doesnt open again, I need to know exactly what you see in the Command window. Write it down please and copy it here. You have to remember that I am sitting at a computer on the other side of the world and I cant see what you see.

Hi

Notepad did not open up at all. I copied and pasted the line exactly as quoted. You stay in the black command screen and when you scroll up it confirms that access was denied etc etc. That is why I was getting confused about the need to take ownership of the Services file as in services.txt. I did search but there no obvious file/folder.

Hope this makes sense.

Ok try this. Click on the Start button and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the command now. Does Notepad open now? If so, copy and paste the contents of the file in this thread.

A large number of your essential services are not running and there is no way you will be able to get online in this state.

I might expect to see a similar pattern on an infected computer. Have you recently had issues with malware? If not, I havent a clue why this has happened unless your security software interfered with the upgrade and corrupted files (you do know it's wise to uninstall any third party security software before installing service packs or upgrading dont you?).

There are too many services not running to try and fix individually so I think the best idea is for you to use your Vista disk and run a Startup Repair. If that doesnt work, try running system restore and restore to before the problem occurred.

See here and here for more help if you need it.
