Computer Hangs

hi.. i am completely clueless as to the reason why my pc would just start hanging...

i installed XP again and it still hangs...

when it hangs... and i push restart.. it won't restart and i'd have to turn the AVR off and then on again to be able to boot the PC...

so, is it a hardware problem?

Hello,
It could be a problem with cooling.
How long has it been since you last cleaned the interiors of your system?
Sometimes, the dust collected inside the box blocks out the air vents;
Just open your computer's cover and then use a blower/compressed air can to blow away the dust inside.

When does it hang? In the middle of specific applications, or just hang randomly?
What is your system's general performance, is it slow or moderately fast?

Hope this helps.

Boot into safe mode and then defragment your hard drive.
Have you changed the RAM on your computer? If not, there's a good chance that the RAM card has been spoilt.
Swapping the RAM card could resolve the problem.
Most of the time, when computers hang, it attributes to over use of application or due to insufficient or bad RAM cards.

Before you go swapping out parts and hoping for improvements you want to vacuum out the fans
and remove the fan from the CPU heat sync and clean between the fins of the heat sync.

To take time and care in doing this. Ensure your careful in there to not touch anything while cleaning inside.

Your BIOS settings report the temperatures so you want to check those temps before and after the cleaning.

Windows XP should have 256MB or more. More RAM would be a noticable speed improvement, another 256MB.

You should get that machine cleaned out, especially if you can see gunk on the fans blades.
...and gunk on the radiator-thingy under the big fan [on the motherboard].
