Unhappy POWERDVD or NVIDIA DVD Software...dvd doesn't work!

Help!!!!!
I have a Pentium4 /Windows 98/2GB Celeron/512MB Memory/30 G. HD

I bought a NVIDIA AGA G4MX440-t last January 03' along with a CenDyne CD-RW /DVD Combo Drive 40xWrite (VERSION 1.32) in order to play DVD movies and to record data onto Disc from Computer. I also have a Creative SoundBlaster "LIVE" soundcard.
I have never viewed a full length DVD since I purchased these items, but did test it briefly when I first put together w/o incident.
I recently tried to view a brand new DVD into my drive and got a MSIDVD Error message with the following info....Most people are telling me it may be the software.
I Do have the DMA enabled on this device in DeviceMGR. [7-9-2002 / Hardware version-163]

<<<<< ERROR MESSAGE >>>>
MSIDVD executed an invalid instruction in

I Also get an "POWERDVD" ERROR MESSAGE when I insert the DVD in.
I have tried to access the NVIDIA and CENDYNE Help Forum with no luck as

I have re-installed the software, when I insert a DVD, it shows the beginning then freezes up, then the Error message appears, not only with this Nvidia, but also with the POWERDVD. (Which I have been told is better thatn the MSI NVIDIA DVD Player software.) But if I uninstall the Video card software, will i totally mess up everything else?

MSIDVD (by MSI that came along with the GeForce4 MX440GPU VGA card) and I think the (POWERDVD Disk from Cyberlink(WIN DVD by Intervideo) that maybe came with the Cendyne CD-RW-DVD Combo player???

Maybe that is a conflict..maybe they are both fighting for the chance to play a movie for me,but either did not want to play the DVD.They both froze.

So do you think I should uninstall the Power DVD and use the MSIDVD as the default player (because of all my onboard Msi VGA I already have)or just the reverse? I do have the "Directx 8.1 Version. I don't know why I have both onboard. I guess I don't understand..when I have the NVidia Video graphics card installed,is that different from the MSI NVidia DVD software installed??

I know.....alot of loaded questions.....,jus trying to understand this software to make the DVD Player work, I don't know why both are instaled.

Thank you for any help. I guess it's Windows XP next....

Looks to me like your soundcard or software DVD players don't support the (default) audio track on the DVD. What's the audio of the DVD?

Some software DVD player do not support multi-channel audio..... and not all soundcards support all audio formats.

I have a similar set-up now with a GF4MX440 and DVD-Rom drive. Thankfully both the Vid Card and DVD drive bundled WinDVD4 so there are no conflicts but i would suggest you have both apps running in background waiting for a DVD to be inserted, when you insert one, they are both fighting for control. You need to disable/uninstall one (I'd suggest the MSIDVD should be disabled) and make sure only one app is trying to play the media.
You could try opening POWERDVD before you insert the media and see if it autoplays properly then?

Thanks guys...
I do have both DVD programs installed. The CDRW/DVD Cendyne came with the POWER DVD software. Should I stay with that and disable the nvidia dvd software?

I don't know which would work best.
After that, I installed the MSI Nvidia Starforce 4GeForce4 MX440,which came with nvidiaDVD software when I loaded up the VGA card. 3-D
Since the MSInvidia GeForce VGA is my main Video, should I stay with their DVD software to make it work better,or do you think it wouldn't make any difference what I have in there?

I do turn on one or the other DVD programs BEFORE inserting the DVD disc, and either one displays the ERROR MESSAGES,then shuts off. Do you think I could only remove the nvidiaDVD software without messing up any Video properties? Since the POWER DVD (from what i've heard) is a more well liked program,Do You think I should remove both DVD programs and upload a trial version of PowerDVD5 to see how that works?

I am still waiting to hear back from Cyberlink(Powerdvd),Cendyne,nVidia, the (DIY)chipset Mobo maker to see if I should update the chipset..I have been told to update all video drivers.

Thanks again! I will post back when i find something. Bozo

I have uninstalled the PowerDVD software, and tried the MSIDVD.. I'm still getting a few ERROR MESSAGES as well as another "F5300002" about the graphics accerator being unchecked..I looked in DEVICE MGR,couldn't see anything, said it was working.
I downloaded the trial version 5.0 POWERDVD, (it only allows about 30 minutes of picture time) and once I got the DVD to play, the sound went off after about five minutes. What the Heck?

Maybe I'm not destined to watch anything but MPEG,and AVI's. Next, I will try to find updated drivers for the VGA card and any fixes for the Cendyne Combo Drive. Wish I did not have such a slo modem. Would I need to update the MoBo Chipset too? I plain don't know. Thanx 4 all yur suggestions. Will keep you posted. Bozo

Red face

Thanks Smurfy and Monzie,
Ok. First of all I downloaded and updated the Nvidia Video graphics driver.I then uninstalled the MSIDVD software, then downloaded the trial version of POWERDVD5.0. Opened up the Poweredvd program and inserted a DVD,and it worked without any ERROR messages..yet.

I went to the DEVICE MGR, DISPLAY ADAPTERS, and under GEFORCE4 MXX440> PROPERTIES, it states there is no conflicts. Where do I see where what IRQ setting is for the Display adapter? is it supposed to be IRQ 11?

After doing all that and using the recommeded 16bit HIGH Color/1024x768 for the DVD..when in like Photoshop, and a few other programs, there are black boxes (icons) where actual color should be,and like one or two 1 pixel posterized lines running thru different areas..Am wondering if the driver was the right one to update. (45.23_win9x_english.exe- 4.14.10.4523) the old one was 4.13.01.3000. I don't know why this is happn'n. But at least the DVD is working.

BTW/FYI....This trial version only plays Video for 30 mins.,and Audio for 5 minutes each time the DVD is inserted for 14 days. I will try to reinstall the MSIDVD and any updated drivers for that,if I can find one.... and also see if I still have ERROR MESSAGES. I;ve heard that PowerDVD is far suerior than the MSIDVD player software, but I'm trying to watch my money and not go out and buy the new 5.0.Powerdvd program. Thanks, Bozo

Thanks All,
I easily found the IRQ Resources in Device MGR,and noticed the IRQ setting for the SoundBlaster is #11,and the GeForce is resource IRQ #05.
I always thought that updating a driver was the best policy on better performance. Maybe the updated driver and the Photoshop color files don't like each other. (when in Photoshop the icons in the open folder are black) and in other programs, when dragging the windows around the desktop, the boxes seems to "trail". Maybe I thought by updating the VGA driver, the DVD would work better. Thanks again for all the input!
