H-P printer memory card reader doesn't work

Hi all,
A friend has an H-P 7760 printer with a built-in memory card reader, so it can print digital photos without using a computer. It has quit reading photos from her memory cards, (e.g. a Fujifilm XD picture card). The printer still prints OK from her computer. She tried several memory cards with no luck.
If the consensus is that the memory card reader has failed, can those be replaced for less than the price of a new printer?
Her computer is an H-P Pavilion running XP Pro with the latest patches. She hasn't updated her printer drivers recently, and she hasn't installed new software.
Thanks,
