Safe-mode runs fine, normal mode freezes
Hi, thanks for taking the time to read. I recently built a new computer (mainly through advice of friends).
Case and Power Supply Processor Motherboard RAM Video Card Hard Drive DVD-RD DL DVD ROM Mouse OS Since I'm pretty much computer illiterate, friends helped me pick out these parts, and one friend built it for me. It worked fine for a couple of days, but for the past two weeks, on seemingly random days, it would act up. When booting in normal mode, after logging in, then trying to run any program, the computer would just endlessly display the hourglass and not move at all. No program is runable (no task manager, IE, or anything else). Some days it would do this, but some days it wouldn't. But if it did it on a given day, it would do the same thing everytime for the rest of the day (or most of it). I couldn't even shut down or log off, so I'd just have to turn it off. A few days ago, it started doing this and hasn't stopped. Also, if I boot up and don't immediately log in, I become unable to click any user names to log in. And I can't reboot/shut down or anything. All I can do is move the mouse. Or, if you wait a little less, it'll just stop at the "Welcome" screen. I ran eZ Trust Anti-virus, anti-ad/spyware, and AdAware, but it didn't solve the problem. But the computer functions fine when run in safe mode. I can run any programs I want, and if I run it in safe mode w/ networking, the internet is fine too. Any idea what's going on? Someone suggested it might be faulty RAM, so he had me run a memtest86+. It ran through 14 times and found zero errors. The only other suggestion I've gotten so far is to reinstall windows, but I'd like to exhaust any other possible options first just to avoid the headache. Also, it isn't overheating. I know because even after I left it off for an entire day a day or two ago, it did the same thing. Also, the video card drivers installed along with something called "AI Booster," a program that does some special, irrelevant things. What applies here is the fact that it displays CPU temp, which was around 23 degrees celcius I believe (this program runs on start up, so it would load before the apparent freeze up would occur) But it isn't even a real freeze up, because I can move the mouse just fine. One last thing - I ran MSCONFIG in safe-mode and turned off all start up programs. Didn't help. Any ideas? Thanks. Last edited by John117_mc; March 15th, 2006 at 01:08 AM. |

Welcome to CTH John117_mc. Lets see what is running on your PC. Go here and download the latest version of Hijack This. Unzip it and click on scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.
Also go here and download Silent Runners.vbs to your Desktop (use IE) and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready. Please post the information back in this thread. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. Both programs will run in Safe Mode. |

Ok, will do. I'm on my old computer at the moment, so I'm just going to email my self the URL for this thread so I can access your links easily. I'll post again when the Hijack This scan is done. Should I run that other program before I post again as well?
Thanks for your help, I thought this would be a good community. |

Well, now my new computer is working. What should I do to try and find out what the problem is?
A.K.A., I'm on it right now, and in normal mode. |

Although it appears that my internet is failing after a certain amount of time. Like five or ten minutes after signing on, I get nothing but "cannot find server" errors. This was happening when I was in safe mode too, I think. Restarting regains a connection, and this time, an icon appeared in my system tray.
"Local Area Connection Speed: 100.0 Mbps Status: Acquiring network address" |

Actually, it's the "page cannot be displayed" error, and I checked that icon in the tray... my session was at ten or eleven minutes last time when pages wouldn't load anymore. And it's every site, not just one. This time when I booted, no tray icon.
I just noticed there are two more steps with that clean boot. Should I go ahead and start re-enabling things one by one, or do I need to solve this intenet issue first? |

Hi John, yes start re-enabling items one by one until you find the culprit. Your first issue will need to be resolved first and if you still have a problem, we can look at that next.

Well, I almost done with re-enabling all the items. I've enabled everything under the "SYSTEM.INI," "WIN.INI," and "Services" tabs and have not re-experienced my original problem. This doesn't really make sense to me, because this leaves only "Startup" items to be re-enabled. But at one point, I had all of them, and only them, disabled and was still having my problem. I'll finish enabling them, but I'm not expecting to have the problem for some reason. Perhaps I've gone back to my earlier described state where it only happens some of the time?

Ok. Well, after enabling five or so startup items, I started having the problem again. The one I enabled immediately before the problem occured was GoogleTalk. I should note that for some reason, I have two startup items named GoogleTalk. After enabling the first one on the list, the problem started again. I rebooted and had the problem. I rebooted in safe mode, diabled GoogleTalk, and rebooted. But I still have the problem. I rebooted in safe mode, disabled the startup item before GoogleTalk, something relating to my HP printer, and rebooted. Still have the problem.
So frustrating... I'm going to start working backwards, re-disabling items until it starts working again, hopefully I can pinpoint the item causing the problem. |

I think I have found the culprit. Under services, I believe it is something called "TrueVector Internet Monitor" from "Zone Labs Inc." I'm going to try enabling all startup items and leaving this "Service" disabled and seeing if everything works.
Well, I guess not. Enabling all startup items caused the problem to reappear. However, I can confirm that with all startup items off, and with the above "Service" off, the computer functions. Except for the aforementioned 10-minute internet connection problem. Also, even though I checked "disable all" under startup in safe mode just now before I rebooted, "NvCplt" in enabled for startup. Is this a clue? Last edited by John117_mc; March 15th, 2006 at 09:43 PM. |
