Hello spetersen
I donīt think the problem are virus related, Iīll therefore suggest you try the below first. Open msconfig, as described here: here Uncheck - Application Restart or/and PresentationSettings Reboot, and see if your icons still disappear ? |

Unsure
The problem seemed to go away. I never found the item you wanted me to uncheck, but my general tab is set to selective startup and my boot section had no GUI boot selected. I unchecked the no GUI boot, selected normal start, then my system crashed. (MSCONFIG locked up, and task manager failed to come up - listed as a security failure). I hard booted my system and my icons all stayed there and have been there since I logged back onto this forum. The No GUI boot remained unselected after the reboot, but the startup selection reverted back to selective startup. Is this an issue? Thank you for the help.
Icons disappeared again about 20-30 minutes after I first posted this reply. Last edited by spetersen; February 12th, 2011 at 09:48 AM. Reason: problem returned |

Using the Selective Startup option, you can turn services and startup programs on or off individually to see if the problem occurs the next time you restart your computer.
I donīt think that Selective Startup is necessary on every boot. Please post new hijackthis log, and let's see if there is any changes. |

new hjt log
I was trying to put it on normal startup, but when the computer rebooted it shifted itself to selective startup. I am not sure what else to do to fix this. Do I selectively cycle through which startup programs run and hope? There should be a better method. Anyway, here is my HJT log.
