Power off NAS while writing zeros? Safe?
So another tech at the company I work at clicked the wrong button on a TeraStation Pro NAS and instead of just formatting it, it is now writing zeros to the internal drives. This started yesterday morning and still has a very long way to go. Something that needed to be done yesterday won't even be started until tomorrow at this rate. Unacceptable.
Is it safe to pull the plug on this thing? I figure the firmware will be fine because it isn't on the disks (obviously) and we aren't concerned with data loss (obviously...). I just need to be able to power it back up, log into it, and format the partially zero'd disks. What does CTH think? |

If you pull the plug on that NAS while it is writing those zeros...you may corrupt the bit-block and the drive might not function afterwards.
Worst case scenario the drive may fail to register with the BIOS and then you'll have much more than a one day delay. If it's writing zeros you'll have to wait. |

Thanks for the info, Spider.
I did end up waiting, but after the zero operation completed, it was doing something else that said it was going to take yet another couple hundred hours, so I pulled the plug after talking to the CTO. He didn't think it was the best idea, by the way, but said "meh, we need a new one anyways so if it fails, we'll have a reason to go buy a Drobo". Everything worked out. Thanks again! |
