avi too big ?

I have a 1.4 giga avi video file that I want to put on a CD/DVD for
a friend using my Liteon CD/DVD Burner. Some things I do not know ...
- can a DVD store 1.4 giga ?
- is avi a good universal generic format for PC external DVD players ?
- would it be better to convert/compress the file before burning ?
- if so, to what format and with what (free) app ?

thanks for your help.

A Dvd will hold 4.7gb of data so no problems there. As for the file type, avi is fine if it's going to be played on another computer. If you want to play it on a stand alone dvd player you'll have to encode it with something like roxio or nero. I don't know of any free programs off the top of my head that do that but perhaps if you do a search at a site like download.com you could probably dredge up something......

Thanks for the help. I found an app call WinAvi Converter which can
make the files for burning to a DVD that can be read by a home DVD player.

If you need to reduce file size - go with VisiCrop
