xp to vista

My son has a computer that I want to put Vista on. It is running xp right now. Can I just buy Vista Home Premium and install? Is it an uprade or do I need the full version? I have seen both for sale. thanks

if the computer will handle vista, then all you need is the upgrade version. run the microsoft vista advisor if you had not yet.

I am sorry but imo, your computer will not support vista properly even with ram increase. for vista to run properly, you will need 2 gigs of ram 1 gig will work but there would be problems. I would not even think about running with only 512 meg.

Have you gone to compaq/hp's website and see if there are vista drivers available for your specific model? If not then you should not upgrade.

you did not give the full model number of the computer but I doubt it will handle 2 gigs of ram.
