Fallacy of Open Sourceware

One of my takeaways from the pandemic is that Linux and similar open source and or free options utterly failed to distinguish themselves.

If you look at this site, you'll note the number of Linux inquiries is and has been minimal. Distrowatch also has not indicated a lot of activity/interest for Linux either.

Meanwhile, with all the school kids at home needing access to on line learning, and seniors locked up in nursing homes, you would have thought that the first call would go out to everyone with an old clunker that could be very conveniently switched to Linux to donate it so people who could not afford computers would have them fully loaded with Zoom etc at virtually no cost.

Instead, schools bought millions of Chromebooks which are extremely limited in their usefulness, and because it requires you to be on line all the time to get anything out of it, hogs up home wifi connections, which is a separate disaster. Meanwhile, adapting an old Linux computer for Zoom, I discovered, is extremely problematic and I don't think it is any easier if your school, office, or relative prefers Teams.

The whole point of Open Source was supposed to be like they say in baseball, "we got a guy on it." Apparently not.

And the reason for that is probably that the systems just keep on keeping on.

Medical researchers have discovered a new disease that has no symptoms. It is impossible to detect, and there is no known cure. Fortunately, no cases have been reported thus far.
Yeah.
