Angry ME Upgrade on brand new blank HD fails and fails

Hello, I am trying to install Win ME upgrade on a clean hard drive. The HD was installed by a Mom & Pop computer store. The first time, I got so many errors I stopped writing them down. Using fdisk I went in and looked and saw that the single partition (40 G drive) was "non-Dos". I deleted it and created a single DOS partition. I began the install again, and although this time I was able to "complete" the install, it was not without many error message, blue screens and re-boots -- and what I got at the end is what looks like Safe Mode. It's a mess. What can possibly be going on? Thanks for any ideas you can give me (BTW, I know some of you will say "chuck the upgrade and use the full version" but WHY won't the upgrade work when it's supposed to, and just so you know, I'm not spending any more $$ on my son's old [P2] PC).

Howdy and Welcome to CTH:

What are you using for a qualifying operating system in order to use the upgrade cd??

Is the cd a retail WinME upgrade cd or an OEM from another manufacturer??

answers to your questions

I'm using a win98SE disk. The ME is the retail upgrade disk.
