IE 9 update woes

I'm trying to update IE to "9" but can't do so successfully. Most times the update process advises of not completing at all and prompts me to "try again". A few times, the update completed and prompts me to restart..... however, after I do and check my IE version info.... I'm still running IE8.

I've disabled all security software and there's no change. I've even tried to update IE in safe mode and still no luck. I'm stumped!! Any ideas anyone???

Thanks,

jayro

P.S. - I'm running Vista 32 bit

Do you have Vista Service pack 2 installed? If not, you need to install that before IE9 will install.

I'd bet MS has a page about this problem. Let me have a look around.

thanks for your efforts but so far NO LUCK...... I just don't get it..... the source of the problem with installing IE9.... I've tried everything in the MS KB's and still I can't successfully update my system..... I think I'm going to try an uninstall for IE altogether and start again from there...... I'll let y'know if I'm any luckier as further info becomes available.

Do have this log in your Windows Folder?

IE9_main.log

It may list some errors. If you tried more than once to install, you may also have
IE9_main.bak

You don't want to hear this. If you can try an sfc /scannow and if it works, great.
Otherwise, you may be in for a repair install of Windows, if you are able. Being that the OEM's generally use a restore partition to take the system back to factory state, you may or may not have that option.

I can't say for certain if uninstalling and then reinstalling SP2 might be an option. These things can be difficult to determine until you try them.

Good luck, I hope something helps.

Ok How about trying this from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414#Fixed

Before you run the fixit, read the entire page, and also create a restore point.

I know the error # is different, but the error message is the same. Also, the command line says no reboot and the article references u0datge which require a reboot. But it isn't, from what I saw there, a fix which is going to do anything harmful.
If you prefer and need help, I can talk you through doing it manually.

So other than that, the Component store Folder which is here
C:\Windows\Winsxs
is not something for us to change manually. Making changes there can actually cause major damage to your system.

So if sfc /scannow (run as Administrator) doesn't work, the registry fixit does no good, and the uninstall and reinstall of SP2 doesn't work, and the tool to fix still won't work.... And you still can't install IE9, then the repair install may be the only thing short of a complete reinstall which will repair the problem.

Also, if the component store is corrupt, you won't be able to apply other security updates. And that's not good at all.
