XP SP3 fails to install

HP Pavilion dv6000, Windows XP Professional SP2

Given that MS supoort for SP2 will shortly end, I decided to upgrade to XP3.
Stopped anti-virus etc as advised under 'preparing for SP3 install' and imaged my disk.

After downloading SP3 I get the 'Installing Updates' dialog with the following messages:

Dialog saying "The updates are being downloaded and installed"

Message pane says:

'Downloading Windows Service pack 3 (KB936929)(update 1 of 1)...done!
Initializing Installation...done!
Installing Windows Service Pack 3 (KB936929)(update 1 of 1)..."

At this point the progess bar stops at about 20%, with occasional hard disk light flicker.

I left the PC on overnight and 6 hours later there has been no change.

So I decided to press 'Cancel'. Up popped the 'Canceling updates...' message and nothing seems to be happening. There is no disk activity apparent.

I don't know how much longer to wait (a couple of hours already.)

Can I just hit the exit icon [X] of the 'Installing Updates' dialog and reboot? Or will my PC be left in an undeterminate or even unusable state?

Thanks

Some updates require to be installed by themselves. IE8 is one of them. Try downloading IE8 by it's self then download SP3.

Hi PaoloRicardo,

Please download Update Cleanup and run it (note you do not need to purchase this program)

Once all temp updates are removed, also download and run CCleaner (Note: CCleaner home page was offline today, hopefully it is up for you)

Then, try updating to SP3 again, but instead of using your large download package try Windows updates, of which downloads about ~80Meg maximum.

Please let us know the outcome

I downloaded the 600mb .iso file, burnt a CD and installed without problems from that.

Don't know why the Windows Update didn't work.

Anyway all is now well ;-)
