Help! Trojan Virus

Someone was playing on my computer last night and must have downloaded a virus. It was working fine until this morning when I restarted it and my start menu and desktop shortcuts are not coming up. I am able to load certain things like Firefox and IE through my Task Manager, but I am unable to run things like HijackThis and Malwarebytes. I ran an eset online scan and it found 8 viruses that all said Trojan. I thought this would take care of my issue but when I restarted I am still having a problem. Could someone reccommend something that would help? Would doing a system restore help?

Hello mel420,

If you have access to it, and have some saved Restore points from before this recent change, then it might undo a good bit of malware changes. More often malware disables or blocks access to System Restore for just that same reason. Let's see if you can run and post some other scans to check.


To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.


Download RSIT (random's system information tool) from here to your desktop, then click on the RSIT.exe to start the scan.

If necessary allow it to locate or download a copy of HijackThis as needed.

Once the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents here for review please. The log can also be found at C:\rsit\log.txt.

RSIT will also create a second log, info.txt, which will be minimized to your taskbar. Post that here as well please (it will also be stored at C:\rsit\info.txt).

You can break logs into parts and use separate posts here when replying and posting the log files, if needed.

Also click here and download the installer for Gmer to your desktop, then click that file to run Gmer.


If on it's opening scan Gmer locates items shown in red or indicates "hidden" or "rootkit", stop there, and click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please. We don't want any crashes just from taking an initial look at things.

If not, then click on Scan (before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan).

When completed, click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please.

I was unable to disable my virus scan because I do not have a start menu or a task bar. I am accessing all my programs through task manager at this point. I posted the RSIT log above. I hope this helps. I am also able to access the system restore thing through MSonfig but I have not done anythign yet

I can sorta see where some malware and it's changes have been, but unfortunately you only posted part of the more important RSIT log.txt log. You may find that the Restore dates you choose are unavailable, but for now yes, if you have the access go ahead and select a recent date you know to be prior to the malware start there, and do the System Restore.


If successful, or even if not successful, go ahead and post the rest of the RSIT log.txt log, and do the Gmer scan and post that log please. These should provide some information to plan any next repair steps there.

So I don't forget to review it with you later, the system has a farily small hard drive, compared to today's standards and larger software installs. The rule of thumb is to leave at least 12% of the drive available, and even the standard setting for the System Restore is 12%:

System drive C: has 4 GB (10%) free of 38 GB

Once everything is back on track there you will need to consider uninstalling unused softwares, and offloading things that can take up drive space quickly, such as music and video files.

Yeah I do not have much memory left. This is an old computer, but its still kicking. Love Dell! Anyway, everytime I run the GMER scan it it dissapears at some point. It takes awhile so I always end up walking away and when I check it, it is not on my screen. I am not sure how to post a log file from it.. I also tried system restore and it did not seem to do anything. I do, however, still have the RSIT files. I will repost the log.txt below.

That log is cut shy again, or at least the scan was.


To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, but I would like you to rename the file as you download it (do not download it directly without renaming it - use right click "Save Target/Link As" ). For this, rename the downloading file to 456out.com, then click the renamed 456out.com to run that scan.

Be sure to install the Recovery Console if you are asked to do so. When the scan completes, a text window with your log will open. Please copy and paste that log back here.

A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.
