Copy and paste function not working

I for some reason cannot copy and paste file from one program to another.
I hightlight the text, click copy, which is hightlighted, then open another app. and the paste button is not hightlighted.
I can however copy and paste within the document I'm working in at that particular moment.
Some thing in the settings maybe??
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanx
Jim

I can copy and paste within the word document I'm working in, but if I copy from the word document I'm in and close the window and open word again to paste into a new document I can't. Same program, same PC.

Okay then that's a little wierd. When did this problem start? Have you changed any of the settings?

Actually it's a friends computer and I am tutoring her and todays lesson was working with documents. I don't think she has ever used the copy and paste, so who knows when it actually started.
I know it has to be something simple, but I've never had to deal with it not working on my PC's before, so I'm a little dumbfounded. Kinda emmbaressing too since she's paying me for my time.
Maybe something in admin. tools, services, I dunno.
Yeah Wierd, copy and paste is what made windows so popular. It's a basic function.
Thanx for your replies wolf. I appreciate it. See what you can find.
Anyone HELP!!

I was thinking it might actually be something to do with services or permissions.
