System Restore Won't Start

My system restore service won't start.

I upgraded my system by adding a Maxtor 250 gig SATA drive to replace the older PATA drive I had.
I used the Maxblast4 application to migrate my XP Pro boot partition to the new drive, removed my old PATA drive, and things seemed to be ok until I tried to access the system restore application.

When I click on the System Restore tab in the Computer Properties, Windows XP reports "An exception has occured while trying to run C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll, control_RunDLL C:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl,"system""

If I go to the System Restore Services Properties window and try to start the service manually it fails and reports: "Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified"

It lists the path to the executable as: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs", and I have no problem navigating to that folder.

If I type "path" from the command prompt, "C:\WINDOWS\system32" is listed in the path statement.

Does anyone have any ideas, short of wiping the drive and reinstalling windows?

Thanks a lot!

If you have a retail XP CD,go to start/run and type sfc /scannow
in the box and click OK.
This will run the system file checker and replace any missing
system files.

Thanks for the tip, I have already tried that, with no success.

I have run RegistryMechanic several times also.

You can run a repair install from the windows CD.
Boot to the windows CD.
When it comes to the page that says press R to enter repair
console or enter to continue, press enter.
During the installation you will come to a page with the option
to repair a previous installation.
Choose to repair.
You will probably have to reinstall your device drivers, but all files
and programs should remain intact.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Running the repair option from the XP install disk did the trick, and I did have to reinstall my drivers as recommended. A few other things needed cleaning up, but nothing major.

This forum sure has been a lot of help, thanks again.
