windows95

Someone, please help?! I have an old pentium200 from '97 running windows 95, which will not load. I cannot get to a c:\ nor do i have a bootdisk (which gateway told me i needed) So, I downloaded it from bootdisc.com and when i turn on computer with disk in, an error message reads, non-system disk or disk error, replace and hit any key. I extracted the files as directed from the zip file and everything it asked. Now what? How do I get rid of everything on this computer and reload from scratch? Sincerely, frustrated

First Thoughts

What do you see when you try to boot without the diskette?

Have you opened it up and checked if there's loose cables?

Also, what do you have as far as CD's or diskettes to reinstall from?

I see you only have 1 post and are new to here. If my responses aren't on the ball enough, others better than me can jump in.

Howdy and welcome to CTH:

First of all, go to www.bootdisk.com and download the boot files for Win98.. Once you download it, put a clean, formatted floppy in a: drive and run the download to install the boot files on the floppy..

Now, boot the computer using that bootdisk.. Once you get to a: prompt, put your Win95 cd into the cd-rom drive, change the prompt to the cd-rom drive letter (will probably be one letter higher than normal) and type in "setup" (no quotes)..

nothing happens, there is a flashing cursor and eventually a black screen...what wires am i looking for to be loose? I got to a c: prompt at one point and saved some files off of the c: but then i let it sit and tried to reboot later and never was able to get to a c: prompt. gateway told me to run the bootdisc...and this is how far i got.
i am going to take murrays suggestion and get a win98 bootdisc...then load the win95 cd setup...
thank you for your response
