D-Link DI-524 won't let me telnet

I recently switched from a Linksys router to the D-Link DI-524 so I could have wireless. I have one machine that runs a webserver plus mail, FTP, news, and Shoutcast. I had no problem setting up port forwarding for all that and it works fine. I also have Scrabble and ICQ set up for this machine. No problems. But when I try to telnet into an external site using Windows Telnet, Putty, WinQVT, it won't connect. I don't think I needed to, but I opened up port 23 both ways as well. I didn't have the problem with the Linksys. If I bypass the router, it works fine. I'm running XP-SP2 and Zone Alarm. The clients are all set to "allow" in Zone Alarm and I've even tried turning ZA off altogether. With a direct connection it works fine with ZA turned on.
Any ideas?

You shouldn't need to forward or open ports to telnet out. If you don't mind can you post the telnet address you are trying to telnet to. Also what are the firewall setting used in the dlink router?

I'm having a look over the firewall settings now but in the meantime can you ping the ip 167.142.225.4 from a command line?

Does that router do logging? If so enable it if not already and try to telnet a few times. When done open the log file and see if you can tell by it whats blocking the telnet session. It may not show us much but it may just pin point the problem. I'm still looking over the firewall settings and doing about five hundred things at once so hang in there we will get it worked out.

Not much in the log... nothing to coincide with my attempts to telnet
http://www.mewnlite.com/log.gif
The times are 2 hours off. I had reset it at about 3 PM and even though I've been quite active, there's nothing much in the log.
Meanwhile, I have to log in to bed... big day tomorrow.
Thanks for helping me... I'll check back in the morning.

same problem here

i have a dlink 524 rev.D wireless wouter

i can't telnet 524, but i can successfully telnet my repotec DSL modem

after some googling, it sounds like 524 is not a Telnet-enabled device
