Question Newbie with some questions, please help :)

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspirion 8600 and the dvd/cd burners is cooked, I bought a replacement off ebay, needless to say it failed shortly after I installed it.

Here is my situation that I am looking for some help with, I want to buy an external dvd/cd burner as CHEAP as I can. I have looked into HDD external cases and burners but being such a rookie I want to make sure that I have two compatible pieces of equipment. I would like to get a DVD burner and a compatible external case. If anyone could help me out here that would be greatly appreciated!

Your best bet would be to get a well known Burner, such as an NEC or Pioneer and put this in a USB2 External Enclosure.

Make sure your Dell supports USB2, otherwise you'll be wasting your time

Thanks for the quick response!

I feel so stupid asking this question, how can I figure out if my computer will accept USB2, I am pretty sure it would as I have a external Maxtor HD.

Check in device manager under Universal Serial Bus controllers, click on the plus sign and if any of them says "Enhanced" you've got USB2, if not, then it's USB1.1 or 1.0.
