Transferring from XP 32bit to Win& 64 bit PC
Just got a new pc 64 bit with win 7 I want to transfer data from my old 32 bit win XP onto new pc. the old hard drive is not SATA, would it be possible to connect the old hard drive to the new pc as a slave and copy the data onto the new one, with one being 32bit system and other a 64 bit system?
Thanks kuzzz |

Easier is to use a Easy Transfer USB cable.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=4503 Windows 7 already has the program built in so you would need to install it on the XP machine You can find a cable pretty cheap Example You can also transfer over the internet with the Windows easy transfer software or Yes you could hook the drive up as a slave if the new PC has a IDE port, if the old drive is IDE and the new PC has nothing but SATA ports then your choices are; Get a IDE to SATA adapter Put the drive in an external enclose and use USB to move data |

Windows Easy Transfer cannot transfer programs, but can transfer everything else.
Yes you can use Windows Easy Transfer to a USB Flash drive, Start Windows Easy Transfer on your new computer (the computer you want to transfer files and settings to), and then follow the instructions for using a USB flash drive or an external hard disk. During the transfer process, Windows Easy Transfer will estimate how much disk space is needed to transfer your selections. If you use a USB flash drive, use one with enough storage space for the entire transfer. So you may need a big flash/thumb drive. The Easy transfer cable is a USB cable that you would hook between each computer. Having said this, if you have a USB thumb drive, yes you can copy from the XP to the drive then copy into the Win 7 computer, this will take time as you would have top copy each folder. Example: Copy "My Documents" folders to the Flash drive Then copy from the Flash drive to the Win 7 puter "My Documents" folder You would have to do this for each folder, Music, Documents, Pictures etc. You cannot copy programs You can export your Internet favorites to the flash drive then import into the new computer Same with Email, depending on which email you use. |

wow that would take a long time if i used the flash drive i think the best bet is to find a way to have both machines up and running and use the cable. Thanks for all your imput it's greatly appreciated.

if you already have a home network, you can just copy the files from computer to computer via sharing.

Correct if you have both computers connected to the Internet as renegade600 indicates copy over Network sharing.

The data is safe to transfer, if you have a transfer utility cable, you can plug it in and using your win7 go to their transfer utility (Start > accessories > System Tools > Windows Easy Transfer) and follow directions. You can use a HDD dock and simply plug it into the dock which is plugged into your USB port. You can then either do the same thing or access your files directly. Hope this helps
