How do you reduce file sizes on a picture
A colleague frequently has to send digital stills by mail.
He shoots at the lowest possible resolution (unfortunately, 2.3megapixels). The file sizes are coming out at about 500mb. Does anyone know if there a reasonably easy, cost effective method of considerably reducing the file sizes? |

500MB???? I have a 4 megapixel camera and on the highest quality setting my pics are about 600k - 1MB each.
I use a free program called PhotoFiltre to edit all of my pics. It has an option when saving to reduce the file size, but it sacrifices quality. In most cases, the loss of quality isn't even noticeable though. There's a bunch of free image editing utilities here. The apps specifically related to reducing file size are here. |

http://www.irfanview.com/ has a Batch Processing option.
The advanced options have many settings for resizing etc. |

Thanks to all posters for the suggestions, I'll give them a serious bash next weekend. Bit busy with decorating this weekend, and the big boss is over from So Cal in the week, so I'd better make the office look like it's productive for the duration
