Right click = Close Explorer?

When in My Computer and I right click on any cd drive, I get "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." No other details are supplied. Any ideas?

Hi eweo - perhaps it might be a good idea if we have a look at your startups.

Go here and download and run Startup List. It will generate a log file. Copy the log and paste it back into this thread

Hi eweo - you have a couple of programs running that could cause conflicts but it might be worth a shot installing the EASY CD CREATOR 5 update before we go down that track and see if it helps.

I have already updated to the most current version of ECD Creator. This started happening before I installed ECD Creator. What looks suspicious? What is on your mind?

OK..I have a few suggestions.

TkBellExe = D:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe -osboot

This is a bit of a pest. Its an application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. It runs independently of RealOne Player, to remind AutoUpdate and Message Center to perform their tasks at pre-scheduled intervals. I would recommend that you disable it in msconfig and rename realsched.exe to realsched.old

VirusNet Daily HD Scan = d:\vnwin\vn_daily.bat

I notice that you have PC Cillin installed. Do you need this running too?

NeroCheck = D:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe

NerpCheck is associated with "Nero Burning Rom" CD writing software. Its used to install/control Nero driver nerocd2k.sys. but its only required if you use WinXP and login without admin privileges

D:\OPLIMIT\ocrawr32.exe

From AnswersThatWork - Unfortunately there are many documented conflicts between this background program and other applications such as applications using your modem (!!), or other applications which need to use the scanner. Our recommendation, therefore, is that, unless you do a lot of conversion-to-text scanning (OCR) and you are not experiencing general PC problems or problems with other programs, then you should disable this feature and get used to manually opening OmniPage to scan text. You can disable the feature as follows :
(1) Open OmniPage.
(2) Choose the "Tools \ OCR Aware" menu option.
(3) Remove the check mark against the "Enable OCR Aware" option.

Try each option in the order suggested and let us know how you get on.

Well I tried all of the options you suggested in the order you suggested but none of those worked to resolve the issue. Do you think I might have something corrupt?

Hi eweo - could be. Try this, put your Windows XP CD in your CD ROM Drive and then go to Start > Run, and type:

SFC /SCANNOW

This starts the System File Checker. It will check all your system files for corruption and replace any from the Windows XP CD if necessary.

I did what you recommended but it went through the process and displayed nothing. I am assuming that it did not find any discrepancies. I would have imagined it would at least pick up the updates, as it states on the process bar that it is checking for integrity and that everything is the original version. Is that what it is supposed to do? Just clear off the screen if nothing is found out of the ordinary?

Hi eweo - SFC Creates a log. Have a look in Start > Run > Msinfo32 > Tools > File Signature Verification Ulitity. Just a thought, about the time that this started happening, did you install any third party software (could be a demo) that added an item to your Context Menu? If so, uninstall it and see if you still have a problem.

I tried what you said again but the log did not exist there? Maybe I looked in the wrong spot? No demo's loaded recently or about the time this started. I cannot for the life of me figure this one out.

I'm seeing
D:\WINDOWS\
and
C:\Program Files\

You have WindowsXP installed on D: partition and
all your programs on C: partition. Are you running
a dual boot system?

yes I am running a dual boot system. 98 on my C drive (fat32) and XP on my D drive (ntfs). I just looked into the error report log that Annemarie told me to look at, (I finally found it) It says:01/21/2003 1:42 AM Application Error Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1106, fault address 0x0002f647.

Does that help?
