Try going into device manager and checking if there are any items that are showing as not being installed properly. If there is see if you can download the correct drivers for your device.
When you install the drivers, uninstall it from device manager and then let device manager pick new hardware up etc etc.

Is it just a normal CD-Rom drive or Combo drive etc.

make certain it is jumpered correctly...an ide cable should have 1 master and 1 slave and if it has 2 of either, only 1 will be read.

Im not sure of all the technical names for everything but there is a long flat cable going from the cd drive to the motherboard. There is also a power cord and some cord that goes into my sound card. it is hooked up exactly as my old one was. should i have it hooked up some other way?

Between the power cable and the flat wide ide cable are the jumpers. if it isn't recogniozed it's because you have two ide items on the same cable jumpered as master or slave.....you can only have one of each!

What he's reffering to is the "small plastic piece" that is the jumper. It should say on your CD DRIVE, the words master and slave on the CD DRIVE, is shortened. example: sla mas
Try looking on top of your "actual" CD DRIVE for something similar.

On BENQ it shows the MAS SLA CLS "wording" on top of the drive, this is what I ment and of course the plastic piece in the usual position. You know what those shortened "words" depends on the CD DRIVE you have on the other hand. HERE's ANOTHER SITE & PICTURE OF A CD DRIVE, THE JUMPER IS CYCLED IN RED. HERE
