Exclamation Cannot boot from Western Digital Hard Drive

I bought a Western Digital 74GB, 10,000RPM SATA HD to install my OS on. I deleted the old OS (WinXP Pro) off of another partition and installed WinXP Pro on the WD. After the installation was over and the system rebooted itself nothing happen. It beeped once like it always does, ran a bunch of text down the screen like it always does and then went blank (or black screen) on me. I tried installing the OS on the old partition I had it on before and it worked fine, but I still cannot boot from the Western Digital Hard Drive.

Have you changed the boot drive priority in your setup bios? If not that could be the problem. It's still looking for your old drive to boot off of. To get into your bios need to press F2/F10/DEL whatever it is for your computer and find the Boot menu. Then simply reorder which hard drive comes first.

I still have the OS installed on the other HD so when it boots now it actually asks which Windows XP I would like to boot from. When I choose the XP installed on the Western Digital HD it just goes to a black screen. When I choose the WinXP on the one I've been using it works fine. Regardless, I will check BIOS to see what the boot sequence is for the HDs and reply in the next posting.

When got into BIOS the setting for the boot sequence was already set to boot from the Western Digital HD. Could it be an issue with compalability with the HD and the OS or CPU?

Have you tried reinstalling windows on the Raptor? Maybe you just had a bad install.

I reinstalled it a few times thinking it was a bad install myself but it still did not work.

Go here download the WDC Raptor Diagnostic Tool and run it. Do a complete scan and see what it gives you. This will hopefully explain whether the hard drive is bad or not.

By chance, did the Raptor install put the small boot sector on the drive you took out...there should be about an 8 meg fat32 partition that boots the Raptor that may be on another drive...XP can do that. What I would do is put the XP cd in and boot to the recovery console and then type in "fixboot" and enter reboot and see if that fixes it.
