Computer stuck...

A friend has a Compaq CQ5110 running Vista Home Premium that is stuck on:

Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 46% complete.
Do not turn off your computer.

The computer has remained like this for about 4 hours.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!!

after four hours at 46 percent, I think I would shut it down and hope for the best. Sometimes you just do not have a choice.

Affy, do you know what update he/she was trying to install? That information will be very helpful to prevent this happening again.

Has your friend tried booting into Safe Mode and running System Restore? If so and it didnt help, try booting from the Vista DVD (any Vista DVD will be fine) and running System Restore. See here for more help. A Vista Recovery disk can also be downloaded from here.

Thanks for the replies, renegade600, and AnnMarie!!

My friend is sort of computer-impaired when you start asking technical questions!! All she knows about is the Bible.
Have no clue which updates were being installed.

I went over and rebooted to Safe Mode, and Vista took over. It reverted the installed updates saying:
Quote:
Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes.
Then it restarted, Windows Update came up, and a group of updates were installed.

It went back to:
Configuring updates: Stage X of X - X % complete, and then it successfully installed all the updates.

Have no clue why it got stuck for so long. The second time around went like a breeze.

glad things worked out. Sometimes it just happens for no known reason. Just be thankful that there were no problems
