I was able to do create the cfgcheck.bat file, and the find 'config' in the second step, but when I click the cfgcheck.bat file it says "cannot find the regsearch1.txt file. Do you want to create a new file?"

Instead of guessing why that batch file won't work there, right click on this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Network

And select Export. Save that by any name as a .reg file to a location you can find later. Just a backup, if needed.

Disregard that last comment, I checked my network protocols and they are back. Something in there brought them back. Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. Can this thread stick around for a bit lest the issue return?

Windows rebuilt the Config value on bootup, which corrected the issue. Let's wait a day, then at least do some finishing up steps here. The thread will remain open - all threads here do.

Computer seems to be working great still. Windows update has security updates because I am still running without any protection on the laptop. What virus scan might you suggest to run? I will be getting a new laptop not too long from now and handing this one off to someone else, so I want to keep my webroot for that one, so whats a good freebie?

You had Microsoft Security Essentials installed, so why not just reinstall it.

Just some last changes now to finish up here.

The logs show you have slightly outdated versions of vulnerable programs, so Go to each of these sites and update to the latest version (keep your eyes open - they often slide in "opportunities" for things like Google, or McAfee's scanner):

http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
(For Adobe Reader and Flash Player - uncheck the useless McAfee scan, if offered)

http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
(For Java 7 Update 10 - trying to slip Ask adware/spyware to systems lately, so watch and uncheck it)

Once you have done that, be sure to go to Control Panel, Uninstall/Programs and Features and uninstall any older, more vulnerable Java versions.

---------

Eset, if you don't plan to use it again, uninstalls through the Control Panel - Uninstall/Programs and Features.

You can also at this time delete the files/folders of the tools we used. To assist with some of that run OTL again. This will help by automatically removing some of the tools we used.

Just click CleanUp, and select Yes. When it finishes removing some of the tools and files we used there just agree to the reboot.

-------

In addition, I like to recommend reviewing the information Here to make sure you stay malware free.
