SuSe Linux and ATi graphics cards
Okay, I've done a considerable amount of searching on this topic, but the answers I have found have not helped. I have used ATi's help guide as well as several others. What happens is, after running the ati driver installer and installing the proper (i think) driver, i reboot and check the ATi control panel and it still tells me my OpenGL is not working. What seems to be the problem is that Mesa3D is still operating as my OpenGL driver, and I do not have any 3D support. I'm hoping it's something simple I am overlooking, so if you have any ideas, let me know. Here are my specs:
SuSE Linux 10.0 OSS ATi Radeon 850 (AGP card, 256MB) The driver I'm using is X.Org 6.8 but I have downloaded the others. |

I run through the ATi installer program following the instructions on their website which I will post below. I actually went and checked the install.log and found an error near the bottom:
"kernel inclues at /usr/src/linux/include not found or incomplete file: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h [Error] Kernel Module : Failed to compile kernel module - please consult readme" I'm not sure what this means, but it sounds kinda bad. Also, I'm not sure what readme they are talking about. Anyway, I've tried other downloading techniques I found, but to no avail. I'll link to those as well. Any help on what I need to do would be greatly appreciated. ATi Installer instuctions: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206...24.8-inst.html 3rd Party instructions: http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=...r_Installation |

Thank you, Kage, for your assistance, but those instructions are the same as the other 3rd-party instructions I got, only in a different format. Anyway, this is the situation now. It seems the driver is actually working, the ATi control panel successfully launches and all, but it still lists Mesa3D as my OpenGL driver. And whenever I run 3Ddiag, it tells me there are no capable 3D chipsets found. I am assuming there is probably a file somewhere that I am supposed to change, but I'm not sure which file that is. Thanks for your help so far.

Okay, I checked SuSE Help Center on this issue (something I actually forgot to do) and it wasn't helpful in fixing the problem as much as it was in identifying it. I will post the error I found in Xorg.0.log:

Modprobe fglrx and see what the output of dmesg is.
Precompiled packages of the new ati-fglrx driver should be available soon (if not already) from rpm.livna.org. Maybe those will work better for you. |

How exactly do I get ahold of the rpms from livna.org? Also, the instructions are for Fedora and yum. I'm running SuSe (I'm assuming yast is the suse equivalent), so will the instructions (for the most part, I know the commands will be different) be the same? the message I get from modprobe is "Module not found."
#12
Module not found? Very interesting. Did you run modprobe as root?
Basically yes, YAST is the SuSE equiv of Fedora's yum. |

Yeah, I ran it as root. As a user, the command simply does not work. I tried multiple things to download the driver from that website, but it was a no-go. I couldn't get Yast to find them and I couldn't download them manually (via mozilla). Is it something I am missing?

I'm stumped then.

Okay, I'll do that. Thank you for the help you've given (and thank you for being able to admit being stumped).
