Blue Screen of Death

Help, XP wont boot up. When I press the start button it initially give me the option to select windows xp and starts counting down. There are two windows xp to select but they look identical. Regardless of which one I select I get the following message: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Something about ensuring no new devices have been installed and to press f8 for safe mode.

Technical Information: STOP: 0x000000ED (0x80a09c8,0xc0000032,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Even when I select f8 and select safe mode I get the message.

Here's another MSKB site for that error if you don't have SP1 installed.

Thank you. It seems that I have a damage file system. Im having a hard time locating the Windows CD rom in order to access the recovery console. I have a cd from Gateway that came with the original packing. The label reads Operating System Windows XP Home Edition Version 1. The instructions state: "Use this CD to reinstall your operating system". When I install the disk into the cd drive. I still get the same message. If I press f10 on reboot it allows me to select a boot from but it doesnt matter which one I select I still get the same error message.

I went to MS and downloaded the setup disks for floppy boot install. Created the six disks. Entered disk 1 and restarted computer. Seemed to work. Got all the way up to the last disk and then it just sat there with a please wait message on the bottom. Tried it again. Same thing. Help...

And there is more. Okay I downloaded the setup disks for floppy boot service pack 1 and they got me futher along. I can actually get to the R option on the setup menu. However once I select the R option it ask for the location to the Autochk.exe file. I cant find the file. Can it be downloaded also?

Good grief..this is turning into a God Father trilogy...Okay I think I did it. The cd rom was not reading the cd that contained the Autochke.exe file. So I made a copy of on my other computer onto a 3.5 floppy. When I installed it into the 3.5 drive of the messed up computer it read fine and started to do its thing. I ran the chkdsk /p first and it indicated that there was something askew. I then ran chkdsk /r and that fixed the proble. Xp came up.

Thanks everybody for the help.
