start up shows empty but booting up takes ages

There is a lot of background activity it seems when booting up judging by the clicking and whirring sounds before anything opens up.How do I check what else is happening?

If your startup boots just fine, I personally would leave well enough alone. You can check your startups using something like Autoruns.
