display adapter

Turned on this morning and got message that my display adapter had failed or no longer matched my hardware. In checking the display all the 32 bit color is gone. Everything on my desktop is huge. WHAT has happened and HOW can it be fixed??????

Hi! Don't ya just love Windows?

Right click on the Desk Top and go to Properties then Settings. See if you can change it back. Sometimes when installing programs, it can get reset to a lower res.

Or, for some reason, the video card drivers have been trashed. Look in Device Manager. Are there any conflicts with a yellow ! showing up?

If so, load windows in Safe Mode and remove everything that has to do with the video card. Then, restart windows in normal mode and hopefully windows will "find new hardware" and reinstall all the correct video drivers. Just in case, have the video card driver disk handy, you may need to use it for the installation of the drivers.

Make sure that the setting for the monitor is SVGA, or PnP.

That may be part of the problem. I installed an updated video driver from a softpaq in december. The last time this did this, I reinstalled the video driver from the softpaq CD and it was all okay. But next morning back to ugly. I have looked at the display..it won't change anything..the 32 bit color is just gone. I don't have a copy of '98 to reinstall. ??

Oh, it's a Compaq type. They can be a pain.

If you know the kind of video card you have you could download the drivers off their web site, then try installing them. Yes?

Post the model number of your Compaq and we can point you in the right direction for the drivers. Does that machine have an integrated video chip or does it use a standalone video card ?
