Welcome to CTH

Are you talking about securing your wireless connection, so no one else in the neighborhood can access it?

You will need to open up your wireless router configuration to make it secure;

Depending on the brand of the router. Open up your Internet Browser and in the address bar type the following;

http://192.168.1 if that doesn't work try http://192.168.1.1 this should get you into the router set up.

Some examples of different brnds accessing setup:

D-Link 191.168.0.1
Linksys 192.168.1.1

If you have the manual from your router it will tell you how.

It may ask for a password, try ADMIN, or it may be written on the bottom of the router,

Once in your looking for encryption key and use either WPA-AES or WPA.
Find the tab or entry wireless security

OK, Comcast generally uses a Xfinity router, there should be a label on it that will have the following information;

Network Name (SSID): xxxxxx
Network Key: will be a series of characters and numbers

And may have WPS PIN: and some numbers

Write these down.

If yours is a Xfinity router then do the following;

In your browser type in http://10.0.0.1

Enter admin in the username and password in the password field

Find a Tab that should say Wireless under Security Settings (Could be Advance Settings)

Under the "Authentication Type" box select either

WPA2-PSK (if it is an option)

Under Encryption select "AES"

Now enter a Pre-Shared Key or password this can be a series of numbers, letters doesn't matter usually 10 keys, or you can use the one printed on the label of the router.

Save your settings then refresh your router; To refresh turn the power off for 10 sec, then turn power back on and let the router recycle. You will know its done when all the lights are flashing on the router.

If you cannot access the router configuration try using the other IP addresses I posted. Or post the make and model of the router.

  1. Right click the Windows button (Start Menu), and select Properties.
  2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Notification Area tab.
  3. In the Systems Icons area, ensure that the Network checkbox is selected.
  4. Click Apply, then Ok.

oops OK, this is a LAPTOP right, most newer ones have a wireless card. If it is a PC then you will need to get a PCI Wireless Device.
