Autoplay Problem

Hi, I'm a newbie on this forum but experiencing similar problem as others here and elsewhere with autoplay. I have tried several things already but just seem to be going down deadends so far. When I do the cmd prompt idea, it returns as follows: "System error 1058 has occurred. The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it". I am using Windows 7 on this machine, recently installed about 2 months ago, and I can't recall autoplay ever working on this computer? I've done various googles for info and tried to fix things, but I'm really stuck now. Any ideas much appreciated. Cheers, Rikko

Hi again, just as an afterthought, I have encountered a second problem with my new Windows 7 (Home Premium) installation which is probably unrelated but, ??? ... I have files waiting to be burned to disk, but I want to delete them but am stuck on that problem too, because all the suggested fixes (including Microsofts) don't seem to have any effect and I can't get rid of that annoying bubble every time I log in. Is it possibly a related problem I wonder, but if not, please disregard.... Perhaps even a "repair" of Windows could address these issues? Thanks in anticipation, Rikko

Hi again - sorry if I seem to be 'hogging' the forum here!! Anyway, just to mention that the issue about files waiting to be burned has now been fixed, finally, so please disregard that part of my post, above, but still no success with getting Autoplay to appear? Many thanks, Rikko

Hi rikko, I have moved your posts to the Windows 7 Forum.

Have you tried all the steps in the below two links?

Hi AnnMarie, sorry I got on the wrong forum version before!
Anyway, I have tried all those things, probably 2 or 3 times now, with the following results:
When I plug in any device or insert any media, autoplay does not start. When I hold down the shift key and then do the same thing, still nothing happens. I tried setting autoplay to "ask me every time" and selected to "use Autoplay for all media and devices" (which was already selected), saved and checked again. When right-clicking devices I do not see an "autoplay" option? Running the command box, as administrator, with "net start shellhwdetection" only results in "System error 1058 has occurred. The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it". Like most things, I guess there is a simple solution or maybe I've made some earlier error/s, but at the moment I'm a bit lost. Thanks again, Cheers, Rikko

Sorry I havent replied earlier but I've been busy.

Let see what services are started on your computer.

Click on Start and type cmd in the "Search programs and files" box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the following command in the Code box after the prompt > and hit Enter on your keyboard:

net start> c:\services.txt & start notepad c:\services.txt

Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.

I forgot to mention that upon checking on the Vista forum, I noticed a reference to a possible conflict with Nero (v8 was installed on my system), so I uninstalled it (turned out to be a bit messy, as a corrupt file wouldn't allow Windows to uninstall for whatever reason, so I fully uninstalled using the Nero installer itself). I had to do a couple of system restores in amongst all that as well! I then checked autoplay, without Nero, but it seemed to make no difference. I also tried using a different user windows logon, just to see if that helped, but it didn't. I then downloaded and installed the free Nero Kwik Media program, which you will no doubt see on the Windows services that are started! I didn't setup any file associations with the Kwik media, to try to avoid any future conflicts?
Ok, that's it for now, thanks again,
Rikko

Yes it does. The Shell Hardware Detection service isnt running and it should be.

Click on Start and type services.msc in the "Search programs and files" box. services.msc will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". A windows will open showing your services.

Scroll down to the Shell Hardware Detection service. Doubleclick on it and change the startup type to Automatic. Reboot and run net start> c:\services1.txt & start notepad c:\services1.txt from a command prompt again and post it here. Also post any error messages.
