pc freezing up again

Do I have to re-install my 98SE again??
Recently I had to re-format my hard-drive and re-install my systems program because my pc was freezing up all the time. After I got it back up running and online (direct connect)my IE started freezing up while navigating links on websites, etc.so I download The World browser. It worked fine for a few days but now my pc is freezing up again after navigating a few links.
I tried ruuning my pc maint. program and it doesn't work. It starts o.k. but then just gets stuck and cycles back and forth between file folders and checking allocation tables. I finally have to cancel. Tried the defrag. function only and it starts and stops also. Any suggestions.

My first guess is a hard drive with ever-increasing bad sectors. If that's the case, it'll just get worse and worse until the drive fails completely.

you can go to the harddrives drives manufacturers website, download and run their harddrive diagnosis utility to see if the drive is at fault.

could also be a heat issue, open the case and make sure it is dust free. While it is opne, start the computer and run it as normal. Check all fans and make sure they are running properly also see if it continues to freeze.

You could also consider SpinRite, although not free.
