Question Hiding Your IP address

Do any of you know of a good program that can effectively hide your IP address? I've done some research on it, but haven't really come up with anything. And just how accurate are they? Because I could've sworn mine reported that I was in Wichita, Kansas when I wasn't. And dial-up isn't necessarily 'safer' to use, right? Kinda thought it granted more anonymity since the address changes every time you log on. Well, if you know of any programs...

There are consumer products from Steganos and PC Mesh and there will be others out there.

But you can also trawl proxy lists and add them yourself via your browser. In my experience you don't get a very good web experience at all. You either cannot load pages or are sitting waiting for ages.

I used a trial version of this one, but as Degsy says you wait for ages for pages to load. Supposedly it gets better in the paid for version, but who knows if that's true until you buy it.

Oh, that doesn't sound very good. ("wait for ages") My internet connection is already sluggish. It's usually a pain in the ass.

@ IPR512 - might try that free trial. However, from what you say it may not be worth the hassle because my computer would probably go into a coma.

@ degsy - Your computer vocabulary mystifies me. What is a proxy list? Heard it before, though. Eh, I'll go google it.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

I agree, the only good reason to use those is so, you can ByPass Geo Limitations.

Either than that, I find them, useless.

You can have the fastest internet speed in the world and still have trouble connecting.

Your not really private since the server people can see you and Java format ByPasses proxies (Example: Java-Based ChatRooms).

From the Hide MY IP website:
Does Hide My IP affect the speed of my Internet connection?

In some cases, yes. Most of our IPs are located all over the world, causing your Internet traffic to bounce great distances before reaching your computer. If you are using a fake IP located outside the country you live in, your browsing may be slower. If you live in the United States and would like the fastest browsing, check the box "Require US-Based IP". If you require more IPs from all over the world, check the box Allow Open Network IP Addresses. This setting gets IPs from all over the world, but may slow your browser and may make sites like Google.com come up in a foreign language. Our Premium High-Speed Service allows you to surf on incredibly fast IPs located in the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, and Hong Kong for an extra monthly fee.

So it looks like the gotcha is that you pay $30 for it initially and when you start using it your internet connection is lagging so you wind up signing up for Premium service for another $7 per month or you eat the $30 you spent, and quit using it.

you also need to consider one other possible disadvantage, some websites will refuse the ip address of known proxy services.

Actually using a proxy to hide your IP address from the final server is probably not going to give you any immunity from discovery if your reason is some illegal activity.

The logs of the proxy server could be subpoenaed if necessary and discovery made that way. Obviously if it was only done for some minor reason no one is going to bother to try to find out.

Talking

You're on to me, Ned!
To be honest, I was interested in this because I wanted to download MP3s. I know, I know...it's wrong. Seeing as this route is kind of more hassle than it's worth I'll probably just pay for my music. You've all convinced me to go legit.

Actually I doubt they would bother, it would be more likely for kiddy porn etc, however the music lot like to make a big noise and it could just be you that they decide to make an example of, glad you've seen the error of your way.

Besides the UnLegit Music can Slow and/or Corrupt and/or Damage your Computer and some infections will attempt to collect personal info.

You may also want to consider a Music GiftCard.

Here's a List of Music Stores, if your interested, don't worry some are Drm Free:
